Scot Gemmill impressed by the mentality of his Scotland youngsters

Scotland Under-21 boss Scot Gemmill hailed his side’s mentality as they picked up a crucial 3-1 win over Hungary in their quest for Euro 2025 qualification.

Kieron Bowie’s double inside the opening seven minutes handed Scotland a comfortable two-goal lead, before Liverpool prospect Ben Doak added a third after the half-hour mark.

Barnabas Kovacs netted a consolation for the visitors against the run of play – but Scotland’s scintillating first-half performance earned them a much needed win.

Gemmill said: “Credit to the players. You can always ask for that type of start but it’s very hard to go and do it. They’ve carried on from the performance against Spain, which was a very high level.

“You have got to remember that these are very young players and it’s a great experience for them to play in games where they sense a team threatening a late comeback and they have to step up and deal with that.

“Kieron {Bowie} is doing very well with Northampton this season after being on loan there last season as well and is a very physical player. He is full of running and has a great attitude and application. I’m delighted for him to get his goals.

“It makes you smile when you see players work hard and then get their rewards.”

Steve Clarke was also in attendance at Fir Park with all eyes on 17-year Liverpool star Doak and after his withdrawal on 62 minutes the Scotland manager swiftly headed for the exit.

With Scotland facing France next week in a friendly, there is the potential for the youngster to earn his much anticipated first-team call-up.

Gemmill remained tight-lipped on the subject but was full of praise for the forward, adding: “That’s Steve’s decision but we speak about it all the time and he knows he can take a player from me anytime he wants. He and his staff will decide when that time is.

“Everyone’s excited to see Ben and we all agree that his potential is enormous and he is doing very well.

“We’ve all got a massive responsibility to help him fulfil that potential. It’s amazing to see such a young player who can excite the fans – but he wasn’t the only one tonight.”
