Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn reflected on a “big moment” in the national side’s 3-1 win over Greece and says the victory leaves the side in a strong position in World Cup qualifying.
On a dramatic night at Hampden, Scotland bounced back from a goal down as Ryan Christie, Lewis Ferguson and Lyndon Dykes got on the scoresheet to take a vital three points after a difficult first hour.
Even after Ferguson has made it 2-1 and put Scotland on track for the win, Gunn was called on to make a tremendous save from Greek wonderkid Konstantinos Karetsas, tipping a goalbound effort just around the post in injury time. Dykes then pounced on a mistake at the other end to make sure of the win, but it would have ended differently if not for the Nottingham Forest keeper’s save.
“It was a bit of a blur, really,” Gunn said. “Obviously, the lads did brilliantly to get it to 2-1, and they’re going to come back and try and get the goal.
“I remember getting a little touch and seeing it just go past the post so I’m looking forward to watching it back.
“International games and World Cup qualifiers are all about big moments and I was happy to contribute to the team.”
Gunn admitted that Greece had been on top for long stretches and said that his side only played with freedom after the opposition’s goal jolted them into action.
“Obviously, it felt like a long night at times,” he said. “We had to dig in quite a lot.
“To get the late goals and to turn it around was a great feeling.
“They had a lot of the ball, but I thought we controlled them pretty well. Disappointed to concede the goal but the reaction from the lads, it kind of looked like it took the shackles off as soon as they scored and we had the momentum from the equaliser.”
The team now have to prepare for their second home game of the campaign, against Belarus at Hampden on Sunday. With Thursday’s win having kept the team just behind group leaders Denmark on goal difference, Gunn agreed the side has had a boost that really helps their chances of making next year’s finals in North America.
“100%,” he said. “It was our first home game in the campaign, and we need to pick up the wins at home.
“It puts us in a strong position, and we have to follow it up on Sunday now.”
