Scotland have defeated Spain to go top of Group A in what will go down as a famous victory at Hampden Park.
The 2-0 win puts Steve Clarke’s men three points ahead of the former world and European champions while making it six points from six and back-to-back wins in their opening two games.
Scott McTominay scored another double to add to his brace against Cyprus with early goals in both halves to give the Scots a two goal lead.
SNS GroupClarke made three changes to the team that beat Cyprus 3-0 in the opening game with Ryan Jack, Stuart Armstrong and injured Che Adams dropping out to be replaced by McTominay, Ryan Christie and Lyndon Dykes.
Spain also won their first game by three goals to nil and arrived at Hampden looking to keep up their winning start.
But it was the hosts who took the lead when McTominay fired past Kepa before the game was even ten minutes old.
The goal came after good work from Andy Robertson down the left and the Tartan Army erupted when the Manchester United midfielder scored his third goal in the opening two games, thanks to a deflection that took the ball past the Chelsea keeper.
Scotland nearly doubled the lead just a few minutes when the defence opened up for Ryan Christie but the Bournemouth man fired his shot just wide of the post as the inexperienced Spain side looked rattled early and struggled to get into the game amid a frantic start.
The visitors gradually started getting back into the game and had their first real chance after taking advantage of a mistimed back back pass from Aaron Hickey and Angus Gunn had his cross bar to thank for keeping the ball out of the net from Joselu’s close range header.
Just moments later Rodri came close with another header that flew just over the bar before Gunn made a save to keep out Porro as the former world champions started to turn the screw.
Yeremi was next to try his luck but again the shot was too high and went over the bar for a goal kick and some much needed respite for Scotland.
But just like it looked like Spain were starting to control the game Scotland got back into it and even managed to create another couple of chances, the best of which fell to Dykes in injury time, before the ref blew his whistle and allowed them to take their lead into the second 45.
The half was only five minutes old when McTominay scored again to double the lead and put the Tartan Army in dreamland.
Kieran Tierney made the goal with a lung busting run down the left hand side before feeding McTominay who put it away nicely for his second of the game.
It was nearly three just minutes later when John McGinn struck the bar from a free-kick as the Tartan Army started dreaming of a famous victory with a chorus of “we’re going to Germany” ringing out throughout the stadium.
From then Scotland managed to see out the game with relative ease and secured the famous win with a polished performance that will bring as much joy to the Scotland fans as the result itself.
Next up for Clarke and his men is a trip to play Norway in the summer as they look to continue their winning start against a side with only a point from their opening two games.
