Scotland have defeated Ukraine in a qualifier for the Women’s World Cup.
The four goal victory puts the Scots five points behind group leaders Spain with one game to go as they bid for a playoff place for the tournament to be held in Australia and New Zealand next year.
Caroline Weir scored the opener from the penalty spot with her 14th goal for her country with only nine minutes on the clock before Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert doubled the lead seven minutes later.
The first half goals kept coming for Scotland and a double from Manchester United forward Martha Thomas made it 4-0 going into the break.
The goals dried up in the second half but manager Pedro Martinez Losa will be delighted with the score line that remained 4-0 at full time.
The game was played in Poland due to ongoing trouble in Ukraine following the invasion by neighbouring Russia.
Martinez Losa’s side will now travel to play Faroe Islands in their next game on September 6.
Spain are runaway leaders in the group with six wins from six and a huge goal difference of +45 meaning they are guaranteed the top spot in Group B.
However, if Scotland can hold on to second spot in the group then they will get a second chance of qualification through the playoffs.
