Scotland captain Andy Robertson has been left “devastated” as his bid for a second Champions League win ended in defeat to Real Madrid in Paris.
A second half goal from Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior was enough to settle the game in favour of the Spanish giants who beat Liverpool 1-0 on Saturday night.
Robertson, who played the full 90 minutes at the Stade de France on Saturday, has now played in three European Cup finals in his five years at Anfield.
The 28-year-old was won and lost two, both to the 14-times winners, as the Merseyside club fell short again just a week after losing the English Premier League title to Man City on the last day of the season.
Speaking after the game the former Dundee United and Queen’s Park defender admitted they could have played better, despite the heroics of Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois between the sticks for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
He said: “That is what happens when you come to finals and you don’t win.
“We had chances and came up against an unbelievable goalie tonight, he pulled off some unbelievable saves.
“But if we are being honest, we could have played a bit better, especially in the second half.
“We were in control, then in the second half didn’t start great and when you come up against teams like that, they know how to win finals, once they got their noses in front, they showed that.
“We had our chances, but it just wasn’t meant to be.”
He will now have to put the disappointment of losing the most important club fixture of the season to one side for his return to Glasgow when he will lead the country out against Ukraine in Wednesday’s World Cup play-off.
If Steve Clarke’s men are successful against the Ukrainians at Hampden then they will face a trip to Cardiff for an all or nothing clash with Wales for a place at Qatar 2022.
