Andy Robertson is to undergo a scan on Monday after the Liverpool defender suffered an ankle injury during a pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao.
The Scotland captain now faces a wait to learn if he will miss the start of the Premier League season, and potentially Scotland’s World Cup qualifiers next month.
Robertson, who played every minute of Liverpool’s league campaign last season and led his country during their return to a major finals at Euro 2020, twisted his ankle while stopping a cross from Alex Berenguer in the match on Sunday. The defender appeared to be in serious pain before being helped from the pitch.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said after the match that it was too early to say how serious the injury may be.
“We obviously don’t know in the moment how serious it is,” Klopp said. “It was pretty painful and that’s why Andy went off.
“You probably saw it on the TV pictures better than we did, but he got the ball, the ball on the front of his foot, [and] twisted the ankle.
“The pain settled already, but we cannot say anything further without further assessment tomorrow. He has to get a scan and then we will know more.”
Scotland face Denmark away on September 1 in their next qualifier for Qatar 2020, with a home match against Moldova three days later and a trip to Austria on September 7.
