Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay takes aim at Georgia 'babies' and provocation

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has criticised Georgia’s players for their behaviour in the 2-2 draw in Tbilisi, saying they were guilty of play acting and ‘crying like babies’.

Georgia led twice in the Euro 2024 qualifier but McTominay’s seventh goal of the qualification campaign and Lawrence Shankland’s late header ensured a point for Steve Clarke’s side.

Though Scotland have already booked their place at next year’s finals, the Manchester United midfielder felt the point was well-earned and showed character but he was less impressed by the opposition.

The game was marked by a series of flashpoints, with five yellow cards shown and a succession of fiery challenges and confrontations. McTominay was left angered by Georgia’s players reactions. believing they exaggerated or faked injury and tried to influence the referee.

“We were going into the game to win the game, but definitely not lose the game as well,” he told Viaplay at full-time. “Every game at this level is big, and obviously they have got some really, really good footballers but tonight I thought the way they were acting was a disgrace in terms of provoking the referee as well.

“It’s not the way it should go, but that’s football and it’s sometimes the way it goes. We have to keep our heads but it’s difficult.

“There are some disappointed heads in the dressing room but I think it’s something we can build on it terms of coming back twice. They should do something about players pretending to be injured when they are not.

“It’s a difficult one to call, but rolling around crying like babies is not football and for us we just wanted to get in the game and play, while on the other side they are provoking the referee a lot.”
