Scotland forward Oli McBurnie has been ruled out for the remainder of the club season and will not play for Sheffield United again before Steve Clarke names his Euro 2020 squad.

United have confirmed the injury that forced McBurnie off the pitch during his side’s 3-0 loss to Arsenal last weekend is significant, with the player having fractured the fifth metatarsal in his foot.

The injury usually takes six to eight weeks to heal, meaning he won’t play any of United’s remaining Premier League games and is unlikely to be fully fit by the time Scotland play their pre-tournament friendlies against Netherlands and Luxembourg.

That puts the striker’s chances of making Clarke’s final 23 for the summer tournament in jeopardy.

McBurnie made his international debut in 2018 and has 16 international caps but has yet to score a goal for his country.
