Scotland thrashed by Lionesses at Hampden in final Women's Nations League game

Scotland have been thrashed by England at Hampden in their final game of the Women’s Nation League.

Pedro Martinez Losa’s side had already been relegated from League A1 before a ball was kicked and they fell apart at the national stadium on Tuesday night.

Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses ran riot in Glasgow with a 6-0 victory but were left disappointed at the end as they narrowly missed out on top of the group to the Netherlands.

England failing to top the group means Team GB are no longer in contention to reach next year’s Olympics being held in Paris.

Netherlands beat Belgium 4-0, with two goals in injury time, in their final game to finish ahead of the World Cup finalists on goal difference.

Scotland finish rock bottom of the section with only two points from their six games.

Alex Greenwood opened the scoring before a quick-fire double from Lauren James put England 3-0 up and Beth Mead made it 4-0 just before half-time.

Fran Kirby made it 5-0 early in the second and Lucy Bronze thought she had secured a place in Paris next year when she made it 6-0 in injury-time.

But late drama in the group’s other game in Tilburg denied them top spot as Netherlands scored in the fifth minute of injury-time to win the group by one goal.

A conflict of interest was widely discussed before the game at Hampden as a victory for the Lionesses – the nominated nation on behalf of Team GB in qualification for Paris next year – was the only way any Scottish players would be able to feature at the Games.

With only pride left to play for in front of 15,320 fans, Martinez Losa made four changes from the side that drew with Belgium on Friday with goalkeeper Lee Gibson, Emma Mukandi, Rachel McLauchlan and Kirsty Hanson coming into the side.

The visitors, who had stormed back to beat Netherlands 3-2 in their last outing, showed two changes with attacker Mead starting for the first time since sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury more than 12 months ago and Esme Morgan returning in defence.
