Scotland's heaviest defeats revisited following Liverpool's 7-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox

Rangers suffered their heaviest-ever defeat in Europe on Wednesday night which leaves them on the brink of claiming the unwanted record of the Champions League’s “worst ever” side.

The 7-1 loss to a Mo Salah-inspired Liverpool now ranks alongside the team’s 1957 League Cup final defeat to Celtic as the worst result in the club’s history across all competitions.

It also means that if they lose their last two group games and concede four goals without reply in the process, then Dinamo Zagreb’s final tally from 11 years ago will be equalled.

The Croatian side finished the group stages with 0 points and a goal difference of -19 in the 2011/12 season.

Rangers currently sit on 0 points and a goal difference of -15 with games away to Napoli and at home to Ajax still to come.

2013: Hibernian 0-7 Malmo (0-9 on aggregate)

Hibs were humbled by the Swedish side at Easter Road with a score-line that represents the joint heaviest defeat and worst home defeat for any Scottish side in European competition.

Pat Fenlon’s side found themselves 4-0 down at half-time in the second leg following a 2-0 away defeat in the first leg.

And the floodgates were well and truly opened in the second 45 in Edinburgh as Malmo ran amok with a disjointed Hibs defence.

They were 7-0 up with 18 minutes of the game remaining with the home support left fearing double-figures.

2022: AZ Alkmaar 7-0 Dundee United (7-1 on aggregate)

A Glenn Middleton goal handed Dundee United a first leg victory over the Dutch side in this season’s Europa Conference League qualifiers.

But any hopes Jack Ross’s men had of progression were left in tatters in the Netherlands as AZ ripped them to shreds to go 5-0 up by half-time.

Two second half strikes followed in a forgettable night for the Tannadice club that triggered a run of results culminating in a joint Premiership record 9-0 defeat to Celtic and Ross losing his job.

2016: Barcelona 7-0 Celtic in Champions League

Brendan Rodgers’ side suffered their worst ever defeat in Europe as they were taught a footballing lesson by a frightening Barca forward line of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

Messi put the Catalan giants 2-0 up at half-time before completing his hat-trick in the second, with Neymar and Andres Iniesta also scoring before a late double from Suarez completed the rout.

Celtic finished bottom of a tough group following two draws with Manchester City and a draw and defeat to German side Borussia Mönchengladbach.

1960: Rangers 3-6 Eintracht Frankfurt (4-12 on aggregate) in European Cup

Rangers suffered the heaviest two-legged semi-final defeat in the history of the European Cup/Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960.

The Ibrox side were only a game away from the final but were handed a tough footballing lesson in what to date remains their only time in the last four of the competition.

Frankfurt won 6-1 in Germany before completing the rout with a 6-3 win in Glasgow to seal a 12-4 aggregate victory.

The Bundesliga side returned to Glasgow for the final but this time they were on the wrong end of a 7-3 defeat to Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas-inspired Real Madrid.

1963: Real Madrid 6-0 Rangers in European Cup (7-0 on aggregate)

Three years after the heavy defeat to Frankfurt, Rangers were drawn against their final conquerors Real Madrid in the first round of 1963.

A Ferenc Puskas goal earned the Spanish giants a 1-0 win at Ibrox in the first leg before the Hungarian superstar hit a hat-trick in Madrid.

Gento, Ruiz and Evaristo completed the scoring to secure a 7-0 aggregate victory on their way to the final that they lost to Italian champions Inter Milan.

2017: Celtic 0-5 PSG/ PSG 7-1 Celtic in Champions League

Celtic suffered their worst-ever home defeat to PSG in 2017, just a year after the 7-0 away defeat to Barcelona in the same competition.

Neymar inflicted further pain on the Hoops when he opened the scoring before Kyllian Mbappe, and Edson Cavani also got on the scoresheet in a 5-0 victory for the Ligue 1 champions in the east end of Glasgow.

An own goal from Mikael Lustig completed the scoring at Celtic Park.

Rodgers’ side were handed another heavy defeat in Paris in the return game with Neymar again a thorn in their side as the world’s most expensive player scored a double and assisted another two in a 7-1 drubbing despite a 1st minute goal from Moussa Dembele giving the Hoops an early lead.

Celtic also lost home and away to Bayern Munich but managed to finish third in the group following a 3-0 away win over Belgian champions Anderlecht in Brussels.
