Five more medals on Sunday afternoon has confirmed Birmingham 2022 as Team Scotland’s most successful Commonwealth Games outside of Glasgow in history.
First up was Neah Evans who took home silver in the women’s road race, meaning the record was already all but guaranteed.
The 32-year-old from Renfrewshire won her third medal of the Games with the second placed finish.
That was Scotland’s 42nd medal with three more guaranteed in the boxing finals that would take the total past the previous best of 44.
It was just now a case of whether or not the boxing contingent would add gold or silver to the tally.
Sam Hickey was first up in the middleweight category and the 22-year-old from Dundee set the standard by taking home the gold.
The win was Team Scotland’s ninth gold of the Games and first ever victory in the middleweight division.
Sean Lazzerini then secured gold number 10 and medal number 44 with top prize in the light heavyweight category.
The 25-year-old, who trains at Bellahouston in Glasgow, is the third Scot to win gold at that level in Commonwealth Games history.
That equalled the 44 won by Team Scotland in the Gold Coast four and Reece Lynch added to that tally with the third boxing gold of the day to officially make Birmingham 2022 Scotland’s best ever away games.
Lynch emulated Josh Taylor’s achievements from 2014 and it is the first time Team Scotland have ever claimed three boxing golds.
Finn Crocket then won bronze in the men’s road race in what is his first Commonwealth Games.
Only the 53 medals won in Glasgow eight years ago beats the 11 gold, ten silver and 25 bronze won so far in Birmingham.
And that could grow even further with more action set for Sunday night including Laura Muir in the 1500 metres.
The Inverness runner is looking to add to the bronze she won in the 800 metres on Saturday.
