Scotland could be without Scott McTominay when they face Israel in their Euro 2020 play-off after the midfielder was ruled out for “a few months”.
McTominay suffered a knee injury during Manchester United’s win over Burnley and it was initially expected that he would miss a few weeks of football.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now revealed the player face a longer spell on the sidelines, putting him at serious risk of missing Scotland’s Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Israel in March, and the possible final against Norway or Serbia.
“He’ll be out for a few months,” Solskjaer said.
“It’s a big blow for us because Scott has been magnificent.”
Scotland are aiming to reach a first major finals since 1998 but manager Steve Clarke will be frustrated with another injury blow as he draws up his plans for the play-offs.
John McGinn is already doubtful with an ankle injury, while Kieran Tierney is recovering from a shoulder injury and may not be available.
