Scott Wright: Philippe Clement’s vision for Rangers is becoming even clearer

Scott Wright believes the vision Philippe Clement has for Rangers is becoming even clearer as the Light Blues prepare for a cinch Premiership trip to Motherwell on Christmas Eve.

The Belgian boss took over from Michael Beale in October and although he has yet to lose in 15 games, the last week or so has revealed the most significant signs of progress.

A 3-2 win at Real Betis – which took the Light Blues into the last-16 of the Europa League – followed by a 1-0 Viaplay Cup final success over Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday, while Wednesday night’s 2-0 league victory over St Johnstone at Ibrox kept them hot on the heels of leaders Celtic.

Wright outlined the impact Clement has had on the Gers squad, saying: “I love the way he works. He’s come in and he’s been a breath of fresh air for everyone here, the whole staff, both on and off the pitch.

“His training’s been very good as well and the results we’ve picked up have been fantastic so it’s a case of building momentum.

“He’s just very straightforward. I think you know what you get with him. He’s very clear what he wants from you individually and as a team and his intensity of what he wants to do and what he wants to bring as well.

“I think you can see individually and collectively as a team that the confidence is starting to build and picking up great results always helps with that.

“It wasn’t going to be able to change straight away after one or two games but you can see now that’s he’s had a few more games that you’re starting to see more of the picture and the idea of team he wants out on the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Clement noted his side’s impressive defensive record and hoped to see it continue at Fir Park.

The Light Blues have only conceded eight goals in 17 league games and the Gers boss explained the importance of keeping the back door shut.

He said: “We have a lot of clean sheets. If you have clean sheets you are really close to winning games.

“With the way we are playing, we will always create chances. We will always have chances to score goals so we are close to the three points.

“For me the most important thing is that the players understand that with a more offensive way of playing we defend also better and that they understand what to do.

“Of course there have been some mistakes and we have had goals against that we could have avoided but I see also the players really concentrated to not do it two times or three times.

“It is not about the defence or Jack (Butland), who is also a really good goalkeeper, but also the work that the midfield is doing, the work that the strikers are doing. It is a team effort.”
