Archie Goodburn battled “mental demons” as he overcame his cancer diagnosis to claim silver in the men’s 50m breaststroke at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships.
The 23-year-old, who was diagnosed with three incurable brain tumours in 2024, claimed second place with a time of 27.76 seconds at the London Aquatics Centre.
The Scot, who was first diagnosed in the build-up to Olympic trials, came second to 17-year-old Max Morgan while Filip Nowacki – also 17 – finished third.
“I’m lucky to have a fantastic family around me, girlfriend, my team,” Goodburn told the BBC.
“It’s been really tough. The last few days have been a real mental battle. I’ve been fighting a lot more demons than I thought I would be.
“Well done to these guys stood beside me – they are doing a fantastic job to be racing at the level they are racing at their age.”
Morgan bettered his runners-up finish in the 100m breaststroke earlier this week to win the shorter event, which has been added to the Olympics schedule for 2028.
“Yeah, I’m really happy, especially after what happened yesterday,” Morgan, who recorded a time of 27.69secs, told British Swimming.
“I managed to pick myself up. Had to get my hands on the wall first.”
