SFA to contact UEFA seeking clarification over disallowed Scott McTominay goal against Spain

The Scottish Football Association are to write to UEFA’s head of referees over Scott McTominay’s disallowed goal against Spain.

The governing body will question Roberto Rosetti regarding the decision and the chronology of events which appear to give conflicting information as to why the goal was disallowed in the Euro 2024 qualifying match.

But it is understood that Scottish football bosses will not be asking for the audio between the VAR officials and the referee to be publicly released.

With the game in Seville at 0-0 the Manchester United midfielder struck with what looked like a perfectly good goal from a narrow angle in the second-half.

However, after being called to the VAR monitor the referee decided to disallow the goal in what could yet prove to be a pivotal moment in the qualifying campaign.

It initially looked as though McTominay’s strike was judged to be a foul by Jack Hendry on the goalkeeper, with television pictures proving to be inconclusive.

But UEFA told STV Sport on Friday that the goal was ruled out for offside against the former Dundee and Celtic defender.

Spain went on to win Thursday night’s game 2-0 thanks to late goals from Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sancet.

A draw would have been enough to secure Scotland’s place in next summer’s tournament held in Germany.

Steve Clarke’s men will now be hoping for the Spanish to either win or draw in Oslo on Sunday or face an anxious wait until November when the Dark Blues take on Georgia in Tbilisi and Norway at Hampden.

A Norway win on Sunday would mean that if Scotland fail to beat Georgia, then it will come down to a final day decider in Glasgow on November 19.

Scotland remain top of Group A with 15 points with two games remaining to get the required points that will see them qualify for their second consecutive Euros.
