Snoop Dogg has said he would be “crazy” not to consider investing in Celtic after seeing Ryan Reynolds hit the headlines with his takeover at Welsh club Wrexham.
The multi-millionaire rapper has been pictured in Celtic shirts over the last two decades and wore the kit at his gig in Glasgow’s Hydro last year.
He says he would be interested in making an investment in the Premiership champions and says the club’s fans set them apart from other sides. The 52-year-old even noted that the Celtic mascot was “a match made in heaven” for him.
“I love what Ryan has done with Wrexham – it’s just a great story,” he told the Sunday Mail.
“Investing in a sports team has been something I have been looking at for a long time – if the chance came to invest in Celtic, I would be crazy not to take a look at it.
“I have watched so much soccer in Europe but I have never seen fans like the Celtic fans. There is something so special about them.
“There is a reason why their fans are talked about across Europe – the best players and coaches in the world tell you there is nowhere like Celtic Park and I want to be a part of that. Their mascot is a hound – you couldn’t make that up. Snoop Dogg becomes Hoopy the Hound – that’s gotta be a match made in heaven. The headlines write themselves.”
Celtic is owned by a collection of shareholders, with Irish businessman Dermot Desmond owning just under 35% of the club and controlling a majority stake, but with the Premiership side being a publicly listed company there is no barrier to Snoop Dogg purchasing shares.
The musician said he would love to take in a game with noted Celtic fan Sir Rod Stewart and said he needed to “make that happen”. He also expressed an interest in working with Susan Boyle to help the Scots singer “make a comeback”.
“Susan Boyle is a name everybody is going to remember,” he said. “My boy Simon Cowell knows a star when he sees one and knows how to make serious money for everybody involved.
“I haven’t heard about her in a long time but Susan needs to make a comeback. I’d love to sing with her.”
The rapper, born Calvin Broadus in California in 1971, co-founded an investment firm that is focused on the cannabis industry, has his own clothing line and has deals with companies including Corona, Dunkin’ Donuts, PetCo, Skechers, Klarna, BeyondMeat, Solo Stove, BIC EZ Reach lighters, and GrubHub.
He was an early investor in Reddit and also has shares in Klarna and Robinhood.
Snoop Dogg was first seen in a Celtic top in 2005 but he has been known to wear the shirts of local teams in places he travels to on tour.
The rapper has been pictured holding or wearing the shirts of Burnley, Cardiff City, Manchester United, Norwich City, Brighton and Hove Albion, Barcelona, QPR, Liverpool and Chivas in the past.
