SPFL charge St Mirren over matches called off due to coronavirus

The Scottish Professional Football League has opened disciplinary proceedings against St Mirren over the postponement of two Premiership games.

The Paisley club informed the league that they would unable to put together a squad for matches against Motherwell and Hamilton after an outbreak of coronavirus at the club.

The SPFL agreed to the postponement but opened an investigation into the circumstances, as they did recently when Kilmarnock’s entire squad was advised to self-isolate, forcing them to miss games.

That investigation has resulted in charges being brought against St Mirren, who have been called to a disciplinary hearing.

If proven, there are a number of sanctions available to the league, including a fine or deciding that St Mirren would forfeit the two matches instead of rescheduling them

An SPFL statement read: “The SPFL has today announced that disciplinary proceedings have been commenced against St Mirren FC.

“It is alleged that St Mirren FC breached the SPFL’s Covid-19 Regulations during the lead-up to their postponed League Matches v Motherwell FC on Saturday 17 October and v Hamilton Academical FC on Saturday 24 October.

“The St Mirren hearing will be held before a Sub-Committee of the Board of the SPFL, chaired by an independent legally-qualified chair, on Tuesday 10 and/or Wednesday 11 November.

“The previously announced disciplinary hearing in relation to Kilmarnock FC will be held on Tuesday 10 November and now may also extend into Wednesday 11 November.”
