Midfielder Melker Hallberg has signed for St Johnstone after being released from his contract at Hibernian.

Hallberg’s contract at Easter Road was due to run until the summer but he negotiated an early exit to allow him to sign for Callum Davidson’s side.

The Swede will now work to help lift Saints from the bottom of the table.

St Johnstone manager Davidson said he was delighted to secure the services of the 26-year-old and believes his versatility will be a useful asset as the team fights to avoid relegation.

“I’ve got a player with bags of experience. He knows the league and he’s desperate to come and play and prove himself. It’s a fantastic addition.

“I think he’s a top-class player and he can play anywhere in midfield, as the deeper one or more advanced. It’s another signing that gives me options. I’ve been chasing him for quite a while so I’m delighted to get it over the line.”

Hallberg is available to make his debut against Aberdeen this weekend.

Davidson has been busy in the transfer market trying to revamp his squad for the challenges ahead. Ali Crawford has signed a permanent deal after spending the first half of the season on loan from Bolton, while Daniel Cleary has been signed from Dundalk.

Left-back Tony Gallacher has arrived from Liverpool and John Mahon has been recruited from Sligo Rovers.

Nadir Ciftci has returned to Scottish football after being signed from MKE Ankaragucu, while Cammy MacPherson has made his move from St Mirren permanent.

St Johnstone have also recalled 19-year-old Ukrainian attacking midfielder Max Kucheriavyi from his loan at Brechin City.
