St Mirren aiming to cause Celtic problems in Scottish Cup clash

Stephen Robinson says its “not an impossible task” for St Mirren to upset Celtic again and knock them out of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

The Paisley side are the only Scottish team to beat Ange Postecoglou’s men this season and they aiming to cause them problems again at the weekend’s clash in Glasgow.

St Mirren have been going well in the league as they aim for a top six Premiership finish but Robinson is also keen on a good cup run and knows a shock result at Celtic Park could see them form a path to the latter stages.

He said: “I believe we have players in the team that can cause Celtic problems, every manager knows it’s a tough ask, especially at Celtic Park.

“They have a lot of talent in the side and play with incredible energy but we have matched that before. We played recently and got beat but the biggest disappointment was that we conceded from two set plays and it was our first two set plays of the season.

“If you are going to lose against Celtic you expect it to be wondergoals or really good team moves so we were disappointed with that.

“We need every singe player to be at the top of their game to get a result, which we have done before so it’s certainly not an impossible task.

“It’s a difficult one, yes, but one we have got belief in.

The Saints inflicted Celtic’s only domestic defeat of the season when they beat them 2-0 at the SMiSA stadium in September.

And Robinson knows they will at least have to match that performance to have any chance of progressing to the last eight.

He said: “Everyone knows when you play against the top sides you need to be organised and defend very well, at lot of teams change the way they play away from home at Celtic or Rangers but we don’t, we keep it exactly the same.

“So it will be something we are well versed in and we know we will have to do it better than we done it previously and as well as we done it in the home game.

“We know that if we play as well as we can then we can cause them problems, they have quality players and can be difficult to defend against but we have to do the ‘free things’ better than we have before and I believe we can cause them problems at the other end of the pitch.”

The St Mirren boss also confirmed that defender Richard Tait is needing surgery on a groin injury and will be out for around 6-8 weeks.
