St Mirren have announced the appointment of former Motherwell player and assistant manager Keith Lasley as the club’s new chief operating officer.

The 42-year-old takes on the new role after St Mirren legend Tony Fitzparick retired from his position as chief executive.

Lasley will be responsible for “managing all club operations as well as assisting the board in setting the overall vision and strategy moving forward”, according to the Paisley club.

The former midfielder, who made over 500 appearances for the Steelmen, ends a long association with Motherwell but marks a new chapter for Lasley.

“I have always been ambitious and driven throughout my football career,” he said.

“To prepare for the next phase of my leadership career in football I am currently undertaking a Masters of Sport Directorship at Manchester Metropolitan University. St Mirren, my hometown team, have provided me with an incredible opportunity to realise my ambitions in the role of chief operating officer.

“My on-the-job experience at Motherwell and academic learning have provided me with the skills to be a success in this role and be part of the leadership that will drive St Mirren forward and fulfil the massive potential this club has.

“Having being part of a fan-owned club, which sits at the heart of the community and has set high standards in how to operate, both on and off the park, I look forward to bringing my positive experiences to generate further fans and strengthen community engagement. I believe these are essential components to the success of St Mirren.

“I am excited to be working alongside the St Mirren board and staff in delivering a progressive vision for St Mirren Football Club.”

Lasley will now be reunited with former Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson, who he assisted at Fir Park, as he tries to take the club forward. St Mirren currently sit 10th in the Premiership table, having missed out on a place in the top six.

St Mirren chairman John Needham said the club had appointed the outstanding candidate with relevant experience.

“I am absolutely delighted with this appointment to one of the key positions at the club,” Needham said.

“We received a large number of applications for the role and Keith was selected from a very strong shortlist.

“He is currently studying for a Masters degree and is ambitious to forge a career in high level management in football. Also his wide experience at Motherwell, another fan-owned club, means he is a great fit for us.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Keith and know he will bring great energy and insight to the club.”
