Alex Gogic: St Mirren will have no fear against Celtic in cup final

The 4-1 win over Motherwell put the Paisley side in the Hampden final.

St Mirren defender Alex Gogic insists his side won’t fear Celtic when the two teams meet in the Premier Sports Cup final.

The Paisley team swept Motherwell aside with a 4-1 win at the national stadium on Saturday, and Celtic’s extra-time win over Rangers a day later means the Buddies will face the holders in the showpiece final on December 14.

As holders, and Premiership champions, Celtic will be massive favourites to lift the cup when the team meets but Gogic says that doesn’t mean his team will go in expecting the worst.

“You’ve got to give them respect but at the moment I don’t think we fear anyone,” he told STV.

“The way we’re playing, I think we’ve been unlucky in the league. The performances have been there but the results haven’t.

“On Saturday it showed that if we continue performing then results will come.

“We’ll focus on the league now and when the day comes, there’s nothing to lose.”

The semi-final was the first time St Mirren had reached Hampden since 2021, and they are in a cup final for the first time since their League Cup triumph in 2013.

After successive seasons of strong form under manager Stephen Robinson, Gogic revealed that knockout success had been a target set out for the team in the summer.

“It’s very important,” he said. “At the start of the season the gaffer said we’ve been brilliant in the last three years in finishing top six and qualifying for Europe.

“The only thing he said has been missing is a run in one of the cups.

“I think to get to the final is amazing and everyone is buzzing. For the club and for the fans, we owe them that.”

The Cypriot stopper put a lot of credit for success to Robinson and said that the attention to detail and hard work means every player is well-drilled and there’s no dobut about what’s expected.

“He’s been amazing since the day he joined,” Gogic said. “When he was at Morecambe he tried to get me there on loan but I never went.

“He’s a perfectionist. Every little detail on the pitch he sees it and straight away with the new boys in pre-season we work on it so everyone is on the same page.

“Every player knows what to do in each position. You could put me anywhere on the pitch and I know exactly what he wants me to do.”
