St Mirren have defeated Hibs at Easter Road to make the best possible start to the new campaign.
Stephen Robinson’s men took all three points thanks to last minute winner at the end of a thrilling second-half in Edinburgh on Sunday.
The Paisley side were 2-0 ahead after two goals in three first-half minutes and the score remained the same until after the 70th minute when Hibs staged a fight-back to bring the scores level.
But just when it looked the home side were on the ascendency the Paisley side secured the victory with a late sucker punch.
Saints’ captain Mark O’Hara made it 1-0 from the penalty spot on the 15th minute mark after a VAR check and their lead was doubled just two minutes later when Toyosi Olusanya fired past David Marshall to make it 2-0.
With the home struggling to get into the game, Lee Johnson decided to make a couple of changes after half an hour or the first-half when he put on Dylan Levitt and Jordan Obita for Josh Campbell and Allan Delferriere.
With the second half looking like it was going the same way summer signing Adam Le Fondre was brought on for Martin Boyle.
And the former Reading striker grabbed a goal with just under 20 minutes to go to throw Hibs a lifeline.
The home side finally started to put St Mirren’s defence under a bit of pressure and Christian Doidge came close to an equaliser just minutes later with a glancing header that was well saved by Zach Hemming.
But when the next chance came along Doidge made the best of it and he made it 2-2 after connecting with an Ellie Youhan cross to bring the game level with eight minutes remaining.
Levitt came close to putting them in front after great work by Le Fondre to keep the ball in, but Hemming made the vital save.
Then just as it looked like Hibs were the most likely winner, St Mirren went up the other end to grab the winner in the last minute of the game.
Alex Grieve’s goal came against the run of play but the away support were no less ecstatic as they secured all three-points.
