St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson believes his side face a difficult challenge against Celtic on Wednesday but not an impossible one with the team in good form.
Saturday’s emphatic 4-0 win over St Johnstone means the Paisley side have enjoyed their best start to a season since the 1932/33 season.
Now they face arguably their toughest test so far with a visit to the champions and Premiership leaders. Robinson accepts that his team are huge underdogs despite being third in the table, but says they don’t go into the game without any chance.
“Make no mistake, it’s a tough, tough ask, going to Celtic Park, but it’s not an impossible task,” the St Mirren boss said.
“It’s one we have to be very disciplined with. We have a lot of belief in the players and we believe we can cause them problems.
“I’ve watched a lot of games. As much as Celtic dominate large amounts of possession, which they should do, it’s what we do when we land on the ball. Can we play? Can we break on them?
“I believe we’ve got people in the squad that can hurt them on the counter-attack but to do that you have to be brave enough to try your passes and stay on the ball.”
Reflecting on the start to the season, which has seen the team lose only one of ten league matches so far, Robinson was pleased with the return but quick to point out that he wanted more.
“I think it’s more the players that need to take the plaudits for that,” he said. “But I also remind them at the same time that it’s a start.
“We use the word ‘start‘ because we haven’t finished or achieved anything. We’ve had a fantastic start and they deserve credit for that. It’s now a case of maintaining that.
“It’s a difficult fixture tomorrow night and one we have to overcome.
“We go with confidence. We must be doing something right if it’s the best start in 91 years.
“So we don’t need to change a lot. I think I’ve learnt from before, just through experience, that when you go and change everything that you do through fear, you end up getting nothing anyway.”
We’ll go and do what we do and we’ll try and do it better than we’ve done it because we will need to, to get any kind of result.
