Steven MacLean has returned to former club St Johnstone as new manager Callum Davidson put together his backroom team at McDiarmid Park.

MacLean, who was part of Saints’ Scottish Cup-winning side, has been appointed as a first-team coach at the club.

The former striker will work alongside fellow coach Alec Cleland in assisting Davidson, as well as taking charge of the club’s Under 18 side.

Davidson, who has taken charge of the Perth side after the departure of Tommy Wright, told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted to welcome Steven back to the club as part of my staff and I’m really looking forward to working with him and Alec.

“I obviously know Macca really well and I think we’ve got a nice balance now with Alec’s experience and Steven’s youthful energy.

“We have good strikers at the club both in the first-team-squad and coming through the ranks, and I think that working with Macca will help to bring out the best in them.”

Goalkeeping coach Paul Mathers and sport scientist Alex Headrick remain in their roles as part of the backroom team, though coach Alan Maybury has left after two years at the club.
