Super Saturday: Neil Fachie wins seventh Commonwealth Games gold medal in tandem B sprint

Cyclist Neil Fachie has extended his claim as Scotland’s most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete of all time.

He won his seventh gold medal after he and Aaron Pope won the men’s tandem B sprint final on what has been dubbed Super Saturday.

A crash in the deciding race made it a nervy start, and a restart was required.

But in the end, Fachie and Pope defeated Wales in dramatic fashion.

Fachie’s victory comes as 44 gold medals were up for grabs on the penultimate day of the Games.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, Kate and William, travelled to Glasgow to take in the action, alongside their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

They watched on as the netball semi-finals took place at the Hydro, where Jamaica pulled off a shock win against Australia.

It comes as Summer Shaw, who won Scotland’s first medal in judo at these games, took home the bronze on Friday.

She narrowly lost to Indian Asmita Dey in the semi, but hopes for a rematch down the line.

Shaw told STV News: “Hopefully judo’s in the next Commonwealth, the Indian team are doing great, so I have hopes they’ll put judo into their Games. So I’ll go over there and beat her on her home soil – see how she likes it!”

On Saturday evening, there are plenty of chances for medals for Scotland in the athletics.

Jemma Reekie and Sarah Calvert are in the women’s one-mile race, while both Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman will be aiming for the podium in the men’s.

It comes after Kerr shattered the world record for the distance in July at the London Diamond League meeting with a time of in three minutes, 42.66 seconds.

Kerr said: “This is what it’s about, this is what a home championship is about, bringing your best stars out here and getting them to battle for the top spots.”

Wightman added: “It’s very exciting, I think its going to be hard, we know that for sure, it’s going to be a very, very tough race to try and win.

“First thing you need to do is to get yourself on the start line and compete for it.”

It all culminates on Sunday with the closing ceremony, but first there’s still more medals up for grabs.
