Figures from across the football world have rallied around Rangers legend Andy Goram after he revealed a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Goram, who lifted ten trophies at the Ibrox club, has confirmed doctors have given him about six months to live after being diagnosed with level 4 oesophageal cancer.
The former Rangers, Manchester United and Scotland keeper has also revealed he has turned down chemotherapy for the illness.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Goram said he “will fight like never before” and that doctors have told him to “enjoy everyday life and be as normal as possible”.
He said: “I’ll be here as long as I possibly can. The only difference is the timebomb ticking away”.
Man United, who signed Goram on loan in 2001, revealed an emotional message of support on their website.
They wrote: “Everybody at Manchester United is thinking of Andy Goram and his family after our former goalkeeper announced he has terminal cancer.
“The 58-year-old is best known for playing 184 times with Rangers, where he proudly won five league titles and five domestic cups. He later joined United on loan in the 2000/01 season and made two appearances in the Premier League title run in.
“Goram’s cancer was announced in April and, tragically, he has now confirmed he has only six months left to live. Andy has bravely turned down the chance of chemotherapy after witnessing how ill it made his ex-wife Miriam, who battled cancer last year.
“Andy, everyone at United is thinking of you and sending you strength at this difficult time.”
Motherwell’s chief executive, Alan Burrows, also sent a message of support after the keeper captained the Fir Park club during a spell in 1998.
He wrote: “So very sad to read about former ‘Well skipper Andy Goram. My heart goes out to him and his family and I hope his last months are filled with lots of love and support from the people around him.
“Life’s far too short and, at times, very cruel. Battle on hard, Goalie.”
Former England keeper David James wrote: “After just hearing the news, my thoughts are with Andy Goram, #GKunion.”
Goram started his career with Oldham Athletic in England and won ten trophies in seven years after joining Rangers from Hibernian in 1991.
He then featured for Motherwell and Queen of the South, and had a brief loan spell at Manchester United.
As well as winning 43 international caps in football, he also represented Scotland at cricket.
