SWPL set for photo finish as only three points separate top trio with six games left

The Scottish Women’s Premier League is set for a photo finish after Wednesday’s results leaves the title on a knife edge.

Only three points separate the top three teams with six games remaining after Rangers beat league leaders Glasgow City.

Second placed Celtic beat Hearts 6-0 to cut the gap to City to two points with their Old Firm rivals just a point behind in third.

All three of the sides are still to play each other again in the league, with Rangers hosting Glasgow City on the final day of the season.

Malky Thomson’s side had an injury time goal to thank for picking up all three points at Petershill in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night that blows the title race wide open.

The current champions took the lead through Rachel McLauchlan before Jenna Clark equalised with three minutes left of normal time.

But just when it looked like the points would be shared, Kirsty Howat-Thomson scored the vital winner on the 95th minute mark.

Celtic eased to victory in Edinburgh with five different goal scorers including Jacynta, Chloe Craig, Natasha Flint, Amy Gallacher – who scored a four minute double, and an injury time strike from Katherin Loferski.

The Hoops play both Rangers and City at home in their final six games when they host their Old Firm rivals on Thursday, May 4, before the league leaders visit the Excelsior a week later.

The top two meet in a Scottish Cup semi-final this weekend, with Rangers playing Motherwell in the other tie.

When the league returns City will travel to Partick Thistle as Celtic and Rangers host Hibs and Hearts respectively.
