Scotland fans are to be issued with a phonetic guide to the Ukrainian national anthem in a bid for a show of unity ahead of next week’s World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final.

The Tartan Army are set to pack out Hampden for the delayed fixture on June 1 following Russia’s invasion of the country.

The winners of the match in Glasgow will go on to face Wales for a place at the 2022 edition of the tournament in Qatar later this year.

However language learning app Duolingo is to distribute flyers containing a streamlined version of ‘Shche ne vmerla Ukrayin’ and is asking the Scotland faithful to join in with the official song of their opponents in a display of solidarity.

Lyrics will be posted on social media leading up to kick off, the firm said, with a translated version also shared.

The Tartan Army is being asked to 'sing for Ukraine' ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.

Colin Watkins, UK country manager at Duolingo, said the Tartan Army’s reputation for passionate renditions of ‘Flower of Scotland’ pre-match inspired the call for the opposition anthem to be sung.

He added: “Football unites people, with the World Cup the pinnacle for this, but we all know this match carries even more significance, and the eyes of the world will be watching.

“We want all Scotland fans and all football fans to show their solidarity in song and show the world they are united with Ukraine through language.”
