Team GB’s silver medallist curlers feel they’ve won “more than just a medal” after returning to Scotland.
The men’s quartet made up of skip Bruce Mouat, Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan battled with the Canadians in an effort to win Britain’s first men’s gold Olympic medal since 1924.
However, the Scots were forced to settle for their second silver medal in four years following a nail-biting final.
At the time, Bruce said he was left “very disappointed” by the loss.
Despite missing out on the top step, Team Mouat’s battling spirit has inspired the next generation of young curlers hoping to follow in their footsteps and bring home the gold medal.
The team were met with a rendition of Flower of Scotland as they returned to Glasgow Central Station after landing in Manchester from Milan.
Bruce believes his team’s exploits on the ice in Italy has done “something good” for curling in Scotland.
STV NewsThe Skip said: “It’s pretty special, like the reception that we just got coming back from there, well, we were down in Manchester today.
“But we came back up, just seeing everyone, they’re all pretty excited to see us.
“Feel like we’ve won more than just a medal, we’ve done something good for curling. Like we’re inspiring people to hopefully take part and, you know, inspire that next generation to hopefully win medals again.”
Teammate Hammy McMillan revealed that the group has been blown away by the number of positive messages from supporters back home.
He added: “The amount of messages we’ve had of people just saying, like their kids want to try curling or they want to try curling. So we’re lucky we’ve got the 18 rinks in Scotland that you can try curling at.
“So it’s pretty, pretty amazing. Yeah, if you’ve not tried it yet, get to trycurling.com and give it a whirl.”
