Tete Yengi scored a late double as Livingston saw off a spirited challenge from Cove Rangers to progress to the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup quarter-finals.

The striker scored twice in three minutes to add to Ryan McGowan’s first-half opener as Livi won 3-0 in West Lothian.

Cove had a number of chances to equalise before substitute Yengi took the fifth-round tie beyond them.

The home side dominated the opening stages and Stevie May came close before his former St Johnstone team-mate McGowan opened the scoring in the 25th minute. The defender diverted home Reece McAlear’s free-kick from close range.

The League One promotion chasers responded strongly before half-time and Livi had goalkeeper Jerome Prior to thank for keeping them ahead going into the interval.

Prior made an excellent stop from Findlay Marshall before Fraser Fyvie shot straight at the keeper from a good chance.

The visitors came closer still when Prior pushed Mitch Megginson’s strike on to a post.

Paul Hartley’s side continued to press for an equaliser after the break.

Jamie Brandon denied Megginson with a last-ditch challenge, Fyvie and Connor Scully both shot over and Prior again denied Marshall.

Nick Suman saved Daniel Finlayson’s header at the other end before Will Gillingham was inches away from a leveller with a header.

Yengi put the game out of sight with a quickfire double, the first coming in the 81st minute after he dispatched Scott Pittman’s lay-off from 12 yards.

The striker then slotted home from Lewis Smith’s pass and was denied a hat-trick by a good stop from Suman.
