Todd Cantwell insists past success counts for nothing ahead of Rangers’ PSV trip

Todd Cantwell refused to take any succour from Rangers’ Champions League success over PSV Eindhoven last year ahead of attempting to replicate their achievement on Wednesday night.

Michael Beale’s side drew 2-2 with the Dutch outfit in the first leg of the play-off at Ibrox last week and will have to fight for a group stage place in the Philips Stadion.

At the same stage of the competition last season, under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Rangers also drew 2-2 with PSV in Govan before winning the away leg 1-0 thanks to an Antonio Colak goal.

Midfielder Cantwell, 25, who has become a fans’ favourite since joining Rangers in January, is only looking forward and hopes to make it into European club football’s elite competition.

Asked about last season’s triumph in the Netherlands, he said: “That’s the past so we don’t want to focus on that. That’s what happened last year.

“We can leave other people to think about what happened before for us. That changes nothing tomorrow night.

“It doesn’t matter who won last year. It matters about who wins tomorrow night.

“So for us, there is no focus on what’s happened before.

“I don’t think there’s any secret, it’s every player’s dream to play in the Champions League.

“We had a little taste of it, we’ve had the play-offs now and we’re looking forward to tomorrow night.”
