Dundee Football Club have been paying tribute to former player Fabian Caballero following his death at the age of 46.

The forward joined the Dens Park club in 2000 and spent the next five seasons at Tayside, becoming a fan’s favourite in the dark blue.

He played over 100 games and scored 27 goals during his time in Scotland, and was part of the side that reached the Scottish Cup final in 2003, before leaving at the end of the 2004/05 season.

Before joining Dundee he also had a short loan spell at Arsenal, making three first-team appearances and playing alongside the likes of Nwankwo Kanu, Dennis Bergkamp and Nicolas Anelka.

He also played in several other countries including Argentina, Paraguay, Greece and South Korea during a 19-year professional career.

In a statement released on social media on Saturday morning, Dundee said: “All at Dundee Football Club are extremely shocked and saddened this morning to learn of the passing of former Dundee player Fabian Caballero.

“Fabian passed away at the age of 46 and will be greatly missed by everyone at Dundee Football Club. Fabian signed for the Dee in July 2000 and became a fan favourite amongst the Dundee supporters.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Fabian’s family at this very sad time.”

A statement from the Paraguayan FA read: “The Paraguayan Football Association deeply regrets the passing of former footballer, Fabian Caballero, who had an outstanding career both in Paraguayan football and abroad. We accompany the family and friends in this difficult time.”
