Rock star Rod Stewart, First Minister John Swinney and football clubs from across the UK have been leading tributes to legendary Scotland and Manchester United forward Denis Law following his death at the age of 84.

The Old Trafford giants confirmed the news that the European Cup and Ballon d’Or winner had died on Friday evening.

Law, who is the national team’s joint record goal-scorer in history, is widely regarded as one of the best players Scotland has ever produced.

Tributes have been pouring from the football world and beyond.

Maggie May and I Don’t Want Talk About It singer Stewart posted a picture of himself with Law, both wearing Scotland kits, on Instagram, with the caption “farewell my hero”.

First Minister John Swinney posted on X saying: “Terribly sorry to hear of the death of Denis Law – an inspiring footballer of immense skill and talent.

“His record of scoring goals for Scotland made a special place for him in all of our hearts. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.”

Manchester United, the club where Law made his name alongside the likes of Bobby Charlton and George Best, wrote: “Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84.

Law made his international debut in 1958 and earned his last cap at the 1974 World Cup in a 2-0 win over African side Zaire.

The official X account for the Scotland national team posted a picture of the former forward with the caption:

“A true great. We will not see his likes again.

“Denis Law. 1940-2025.”

Law, who never played for a club team in Scotland, was born in Aberdeen in 1940 and lived there before moving to Huddersfield Town as a teenager.

“Our thoughts are with Denis’ family and friends at this very sad time.”

And Manchester City, where Law had two spells at either side of his eleven years at their city rivals United, said: “The whole of Manchester, including everyone at City, is mourning with you. Rest in peace, Denis. Our thoughts are with Denis’ family and friends at this difficult time.”

The X account of the English Premier League said: “One of British football’s greats. Our sincere condolences to Denis’ family and friends at this sad time.”
