UEFA to be asked to postpone Euro 2020 to allow league finish

UEFA is to be asked to postpone the 2020 European Championships to allow the completion of domestic fixtures that have been postponed due to coronavirus.

National associations across Europe, including Scotland, have put a halt on playing football because of the spread of the disease. The decision has thrown into question how, or if, league and cup competitions will be completed.

In Scotland, title winners, European places and promotion and relegation have still to be settled in the SPFL, while four teams are still contesting the Scottish Cup.

UEFA has already announced an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday to discuss how to handle the effects of the shutdown and the Italian FA have now confirmed that they will push for Euro 2020 to be postponed and the space in the calendar to be used to play outstanding club games.

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabreile Gravina told Sportsmediaset: “We will propose that UEFA postpone the European Championship.

“We will try to get to the end of this Serie A championship because it is fairer and more correct after the many investments and sacrifices of our clubs.”

The Euros would most likely be moved back a year, allowing for a regular domestic season after the summer.

Glasgow’s Hampden Park is scheduled to host three games during the championships, which are being played across 12 host cities.
