Craig Gordon felt “angry” and “let down” by referee John Beaton for sending off Cammy Devlin as Hearts went down to a 2-1 extra-time defeat by Aberdeen in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup semi-final.
The match at Hampden Park was poised at 1-1 and set to go to penalties when the Jambos midfielder, already on a yellow card, was sent packing in the 116th minute for a second bookable offence after fouling Dante Polvara.
Beaton’s decision left the Gorgie side to see out the final few minutes with nine men after defender Michael Steinwender had been shown a straight red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity after bringing down Topi Keskinen in the 43rd minute.
But the Dons eventually took advantage of the Jambos’ lack of manpower as substitute Oday Dabbagh struck in the 118th minute to set up a final showdown with either Celtic or St Johnstone on May 24.
Veteran goalkeeper Gordon said: “We’re pretty angry, disappointed.
“The boys in front of me did a great job. Anything that did come through I managed to save and it looked like we were going to take it to penalties and give ourselves a chance.
“Unfortunately, the big moment comes from a second yellow card for Cammy to put us down to nine and we had to hang on from there, but a second goal comes exactly from the position that Cammy had been defending.
“The referee has made his decision, but everybody feels a bit let down by that one. He has that split second to make that decision, he feels it was a yellow card, we obviously don’t.
“So really, really disappointed that that was a second yellow card and disappointed not to get a chance to take the penalties.”
