Six Scottish football fans are set to race each other to the opening game of Euro 2024 – by getting to Germany using only public transport.

Tennent’s called on Scotland’s “most dedicated fans” to get into three teams of two to take on a time sensitive 1,200-mile race from Hampden to Munich.

Beating hundreds of applicants to take on the challenge, Aberdeen’s William Wallace will join daughter Beth Wallace as they compete against Tartan Army members Ewan Oman and Chris Gibson from Peterhead; and Paisley duo Euan McLelland and Paul Mullan.

The competitors will each head to a separate checkpoint in Europe by ‘any means possible’ – the exception being they won’t be able to use air travel.

Beth, 27, and William, 69, are season ticket holders for Aberdeen and Beth used to travel across the country to attend Scotland games with her mum, who has now sadly passed away.

The duo said: “Being chosen to take on the race feels like we’ve won already, but of course now we’re part of it – we’re going to do everything to try and win.”

Team two, Ewan, 26, and Chris, 49, are founding members of the North East Tartan Army and have travelled all over the world to support the national team.

The pair said: “Qualifying is a momentous, even emotional, moment for Scotland so we just had to be part of the action. With running our own businesses, we’re used to problem solving so cannot wait to take on the challenges, and even a night bus or two!”

The race, which will be filmed for an online mini-series, will be narrated by Love Island’s Iain Stirling and will feature surprise appearances from Scotland football legends past and present along the way.

The teams will stop off at some of Europe’s biggest sporting venues and other iconic locations along the way.

Winners will receive a prize package including flights and accommodation with the Scotland team for a future away game and a Scotland season pass for upcoming home games.

Other prizes include Stuart Armstrong’s hair gel, a Lyndon Dykes transferable tattoo, and a pair of John McGinn signed glasses.

Each step of the 1,200-mile challenge will be captured for an online mini-series narrated by Love Island host Iain Stirling.

Hazel Alexander, senior brand manager at Tennent’s said: “We’ll be watching with bated breath to see how each team gets on, and who will be crowned the winners.”

“We love adventure and football – so the race was right up our street, and we’re here for the win!”
