Alphonso Davies’ lung-bursting run and powerful header not only put his side ahead after only a minute of play, it was the first time Canada has scored in a World Cup match.
The nation qualified in 1986 and played three games but lost to France, Hungary and Soviet Union without finding the net.
Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to Croatia means their World Cup will end after their final group game against Mexico on Thursday but the team’s new target will be to get their first win and their first points.

One to watch
Brazil are back in action on Monday and the tournament favourites take on Switzerland at 4pm.
There’s no Neymar, after the PSG star’s ankle took some punishment against Serbia, but the South American’s aren’t exactly short of attacking talent with Gabriel Jesus, Vinicius Jnr, Rodrigo, Roberto Firmino, Antony and Raphinha to call upon.
All eyes will be on the man who scored both goals in the opening game though. Richarlison shrugged off the competition to take the headlines then, and we’ll be hoping for more of the spectacular finishing he was happy to show off.

The World Cup is traditionally the biggest shop window for players and Qatar 2022 is no different. Spurs are scouting forwards and one has caught their eye.
Belgium’s Kevin de Bruyne revealed in an interview he things the team is too old to win the World Cup, while Eden hazard suggested the defence is too slow. That hasn’t gone down well with everyone in the squad. Or with the manager.
As if defeat to Poland days after a memorable win over Argentina wasn’t enough. It’s now emerged Saudi Arabia’s players won’t all get a free Rolls-Royce and that was just a rumour started by a dentist.
Japan’s players drew praise for leaving a spotless dressing room after their opening game and their supporters are well-known for tidying up after themselves. Now it seems their example is catching on with other supporters.
