100 jobs cut at Sprit Energy as poll shows Aberdeen’s energy capital status in doubt

Spirit Energy has announced plans to reduce the workforce from 150 to 50 by the end of the year

A North Sea energy firm has announced plans to reduce the workforce in Aberdeen from 150 to 50 by the end of the year.

In a statement, Spirit Energy says its plans to cut jobs result from restructuring its UK operation, rather than political decisions.

The announcement comes as a new survey found that almost half of people in the north east think Aberdeen is losing its status as the Energy Capital of Europe.

President Donald Trump claimed that Aberdeen should be booming, reiterating calls for more drilling in a social media post, before adding that the region should “drill, baby drill”.
