A proposal by a Glasgow MP will allow asylum seekers to work six months after moving to Scotland

Supporters say the bill wouldn't just help asylum seekers themselves - it would boost the economy, too.

Asylum seekers would be allowed to work six months after moving to Scotland, under a proposal brought forward by a Glasgow MP.

Carol Monaghan says the move would boost the economy, tackle job shortages and help people integrate into society while lifting them out of poverty.

Under current immigration laws, people who’ve fled their home countries can only apply for work once they’ve spent a year in the asylum system – and only for jobs on a restricted shortage occupation list.

While they wait to hear if they can stay, they’re paid an allowance of five pounds a day. Kaye Nicolson has more.
