The amount of waste that’s sent to incinerators in Scotland to be burned has increased by more than a fifth in the past decade.
New figures from the Shared Data Unit show more than a quarter of rubbish is now sent to what is known as ‘energy from waste facilities’, which generate electricity.
The increase comes from sending less to landfill, however environmentalists believe this solution is also contributing to the climate crisis.
The Scottish Government says that the overall rate of recycling is the highest since records began in 2011.
