Businesses counting the cost of Union Street fire 50 days on

Traders who rely on passing footfall say closed exits at Central Station has impacted business

Monday marks 50 days since the Union Street fire, which destroyed the corner of a B-listed building in Glasgow’s city centre.

The blaze broke out in a vape shop near Central Station, then tore through the Victorian structure, destroying dozens of businesses.

Seven weeks on, the building has been cleared, but with Central Station’s Gordon Street and Union Street exits still out of bounds, traders who rely on the passing footfall are counting the cost.

With no clear timeline for when these barriers will be lifted, many say they don’t know how long they can survive under the current conditions.
