FAI recommends stricter rules for older drivers after toddler’s death

Xander Irvine was killed by a 91-year-old driver in Edinburgh.

The parents of an Edinburgh toddler who died after being hit by 91-year-old driver with undiagnosed dementia have welcomed recommendations to toughen up rules on older drivers.

A fatal accident inquiry into the death of three-year-old Xander Irvine ruled the motorist who killed him should not have been behind the wheel.

The inquiry said the current system of self-certification had “serious failings,” and compulsory cognitive tests for drivers over 80 should be introduced as soon as possible.
