Further wave of prisoners released early amid record prison population

The Scottish Prison Service says overcrowding is putting pressure on rehabilitation efforts

Scotland’s prison population remains at a critical point as 8,444 are behind bars despite the Scottish Government’s rolling emergency early release scheme which has seen hundreds of short term prisoners set free ahead of time.

These measures come to end next month before new changes come into force, when some will automatically be freed from jail.

STV News went to HMP Barlinnie to hear of the ongoing challenges as more prisoners prepare to be liberated this week.

Others working on the outside describe the situation as chaos.
