Ministers ban fires and barbecues in Cairngorms after record wildfires

A seasonal fire management byelaw will come into force in 2026 to tackle the growing risk of wildfires.

After hundreds of wildfires during the summer, including one of the biggest on record, Scottish ministers have taken the extreme step of banning recreational fires and barbecues in the Cairngorms from next year.

There will be enhanced patrols at key sites in the National Park area, and rangers will undergo an extensive training programme.

The ban will be in place each year from April to September in a bid to curb the risk of wildfires.

It comes as yet another ‘extreme’ wildfire warning comes into place for the whole of Scotland, the first September warning since 2020.
