Farming unions have warned the pig sector is under severe pressure, as prices for pork plummet, citing too much pig meat across UK and European markets for driving down the demand and value.
Since the start of the year, the prices have dropped by around 15% which is lower than many farmers have seen in recent years, meaning a loss of £52,000 every month.
The Scottish Government ministers say they’re working to improve prices across the supply chain, adding that there are clear standards for prices that should be offered to producers.
Farmers say supermarkets could help by buying more local produce, but fear the low prices may be here to stay.
