Scotland becomes first part of UK to screen babies for rare muscle disease

Every baby born in Scotland will have the opportunity to be tested for spinal muscular atrophy.

From Monday, every baby born in Scotland will have the opportunity to be tested for the rare genetic disease spinal muscular atrophy.

It causes progressive muscle weakness, often meaning some children never learn to walk.

The screening test at five days old will allow early treatment to take place, potentially preventing symptoms from ever taking hold.
