Scottish Government announces £10m boost for community sentences

Funding aims to ease chronic prison overcrowding as prison chief warns of possible 'catastrophic failure'

An extra £10m to fund community-based sentences has been announced by the Scottish Government, in an effort to tackle chronic prison overcrowding and reduce re-offending.

The prison population hit a record high last year, with the head of the prison service warning today that “catastrophic failure” is possible.
