The next step in the process is for the Supreme Court to rule if the Scottish Parliament has the power to hold a referendum.

The First Minister’s plans for another independence referendum have been called in to question by a former Supreme Court judge and a leading academic.

Nicola Sturgeon wants to test the legality of her plans in the Supreme Court, and if that doesn’t work use the next General Election as a de-facto referendum.

But experts are warning that it is a high risk strategy. At Westminster familiar positions were set out. The UK Government insisting it’s not the right time and the SNP claiming they had no right to block it. Our political editor Colin Mackay reports.
