Temperatures are set to plunge as low as -5C overnight, bringing widespread frost across Scotland.

A large area of high pressure currently covering the Atlantic has placed Scotland in a northerly airflow, meaning it has felt a lot chillier on Tuesday and will continue to feel chilly on Wednesday.

On Monday night, temperatures dropped to 0.6C in Lerwick, but tonight we will see temperatures dropping even further.

Largely dry and clear conditions with light winds means it will be the coldest night of the week, with temperatures dropping to -4C or -5C in some rural glens, particularly around parts of Caithness and Sutherland and the north west Highlands.

This means there will be a fairly widespread frost. Wednesday will start off frosty and chilly for many.

But on Thursday, the wind directions change to more south-southwesterly. So temperatures will start to recover, and things will be feeling milder and less chilly.

However, the weather in general remains unsettled and changeable.
