When and where will Scotland be hit with snow and ice Met Office weather warnings?

Scotland is to see widespread snowfall this week with yellow weather warnings in place across the country.

Scattered snow showers have been predicted to hit Scotland on Monday and continue through to Thursday with severe frost predicted in some places.

Northern parts of the country have already seen snowfall with around 10-15cm being recorded in some spots in Aberdeenshire and the north Highlands.

But as much as 25cm, along with blizzard-like conditions, could fall in exposed areas.

Many places will see temperature dip as low as -6C, but there will be extremes of -15C in the Highlands.

Where will snow fall?

Northern Scotland is expected to be worst hit with the area seeing around 15cm of snow over two days.

On Tuesday, further snow showers could merge into a longer spell of snow resulting in further disruption.

Up to 5cm of snow is expected elsewhere in the country by the end of Sunday, leading to disruption on the roads and railways.

The Met Office has said there is a chance that the northern half of Scotland could see up to 20cm of snow on Tuesday.

Into Wednesday, frequent heavy snow showers are expected to continue inland.

There is the potential for a further 15-20 cm of snow in a few locations during Wednesday across Scotland.

When will it snow?

The snow showers are expected to begin on Monday and last through to Thursday.

What to expect

The Met Office has warned that roads and railways are likely to affected by the weather.

Icy patches are to be expected on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and the potential for injuries from slips and falls.

“The worst areas will be a swathe from around northern Argyll, Stirlingshire, western Fife, Falkirk, Edinburgh and the Lothians, North Lanarkshire, Glasgow, East Ayrshire and possibly Renfrewshire,” said STV meteorologist Sean Batty.

“While some snow will also fall across other parts of Ayrshire and western Argyll, here it will turn to rain for a time, but this will still prove an issue as temperatures plummet again overnight.”
